Nestled off Kent Street and George Street is Regents Place, a gem full of some great little places serving Asian cuisine. At the Kent Street entrance, a small opening next to The Fraser Suites, in among the Asian cuisine, you’ll find a small bar called The Assembly. Is it called that because it’s a great place to gather, or because there is a slight school gym painted black vibe about the place? Who knows – who cares, it’s a great find in the CBD for those who like the small bar scene but at the same time want a bit more room than is often offered in other CBD boutique bars.
As well as a moody, industrial chic interior and eclectic furniture collection which appears to be the first lesson in ‘Opening a Small Bar 101’, the Assembly also has a fairy lighted, astroturfed ‘outdoor area’. I say ‘outdoor area’, it’s outside the bar itself and certainly has a garden feel, but it’s still actually housed inside the Regent Place centre, and therefore covered and no smoking (sorry nicotine slaves).
The Assembly has a bold list of cocktails, not inexpensive but certainly potent and well mixed. There’s a good and affordable wine list, and an interesting selection of beers (though no stout much to my friend’s disappointment). You’ll find a menu of grazing food to help line the stomach – including the ever popular sliders and hot dogs, along with cheese platters and a cured meat board.
On a Saturday night people only tended to pour in after 9.30pm which made it a great place for an evening drink without the usual quota of ‘on the lashers’ which seem to populate the CBD / George Street area on Saturday nights.
